Essay about "the benefit of taking IELSP Program" in the U.S.A

                    Indonesian English Language Program really fits my educational background in FKIP. Deeply in my heart I was so excited when I heard this program will improve my English skills. I am so skillful in analyzing something but very poor in writing academically and grammatically, and public speaking. By joining this program I hope that my English will be better than before. If I am selected to be one of the participants of this program it will really help me to broaden my knowledge about American culture while I improve my writing and speaking skill. Other reason why want to participate this English language program is to make family condition better than this time. I have to master English well to face ASEAN Free Trade Area in which currently happening, the number of people come from all over the world. I train myself by joining English Debate Community in my University to improve my speaking skill, but it is not enough. Therefore I want to learn more and more through this program to reach my dream.

                   I am very fond of literature --- art, and I always imagining seeing The World’s Greatest Museum of Art such as Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Folgers Shakespeare Library that has the world’s largest collection of Shakespeare work. I am interested in American Literature, since I was analyzing “The Horseman in the Sky” that describes how Lincoln tried to give freedom to the slave and how several state seceded and united again. Through literature we also learn history, I love it very much. Harvard College, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston College, and these colleges I am dreaming to study in.

                       I read English book, especially literary work most of my leisure time to entertain myself. Work of art is one of the best “medicines” for life pain. I plan to write my thesis on literature fields. I want to write my thesis on prose analyzing novels.

                  Forever is one of my extra-curricular organizations. It is an organization where Student University of eastern part of East Lombok gathered and discusses the political and economical issues as well as poverty in our area. Poverty is one of the most crucial problem which always being considered in this organization. One of the effect of poverty is there are lot of eastern part of eastern of East Lombok elementary student should leave their school. ForeVer has programs to solve this problem but it does not work successful. Therefore I want to join to this program to make a link with other people all over the world. And I am sure that I will get what I want to improve education in my area in United States --- the most well organized education system I think.

                        This program will really help me and my family much. I have to improve my skill --- writing and speaking --- as I have told you before. It also will influence the other, especially the people who need my help --- especially eastern part of East Lombok. Again, it will very helpful to lot of people, not only me, if I am elected to be participant of this IELSP.

I have been learning English as the second language of my country Indonesia for eight years since I was at Junior High School until at present. Basically, I myself Mahurni who come from a remote area where my village Tirta Nadi, Lab.Haji sub district, East Lombok district is far away from down-town; of course, was hard to find how to access any information. Fortunately, when I had just graduated from Junior High School 1 Lab.Haji, I directly entered into Islamic Center of Nurul Hakim Kediri West Lombok where all the students speak two languages in daily communication. Those languages are English and Arabic.

First of all, going overseas to study English is the best way to improve my studies. Also in the twenty-first century, many problems easily undergoing which need innovative solution to overcome them. One of which is in the developed country where we can learn many things. In addition, of course, there are many advantages of going overseas to study such as; career enhancement, know another culture, expands worldview as well as enhance the value of my degree; of course the studies of English itself.

The second is, generally, the standard of education is higher. This is because colleges and universities have up-to-date equipment and other resources. Furthermore, teachers and lectures are highly-skilled professional who are aware of all the latest development in their field of interest. A final point is that the qualification which a student obtains are valid usually anywhere in the world. 

As well as the obvious academic benefits, I myself can also gain the experience of another country in which are culture, improve my own language skills and meet many new people. Thus, I will develop many interpersonal skills and become more tolerant. I will become emotionally mature as I deal with leaving apart from my family. This helps personal development as they become more independent.

For all of these, I do believe that going abroad by taking a part in the IELSP program will enlarge my knowledge, improve my skills and develop my sense of awareness’ as well as enhance my degree.

My backround of studies

My backround of studies

Living in a remote does not make me lower than any other living in the city such as the city of Mataram. This is because I always try to engage and show to the number of people that I can survive and compete with others. Self-confident, hard-working and belief are my ways to achieve my ambition. For a long period of time I try to do best in various things. Moreover; since I was at Senior High School I started improving my English through entering the school where most students use English as a daily interaction. Islamic Center of Nurul Hakim is the school using the rules spending my studies for three years. In addition, at the school I learned how to enlarge my knowledge while at the previous time I had wasted them.

For a number of people, studying in a boarding school such an Islamic Center is fear. I do believe, that is because they do not know how beautiful sense of togetherness is. We had to have a strong intention if we want to study in Islamic Center with tight rules for any student. Furthermore, we had to be punctual in any program adopted, as if we were armies always trained ready to fight.

Various experiences I got when studying in it, such as; the coordinator of language in the school for two years, the first winner of English Speech Contest inter school in West Lombok and Mataram, the first winner of English Speech Contest inter school in West Nusa Tenggara, and the most experience never do I forget was being the fourth place in National English Speech Contest inter national students Indonesia held at the end of 2007 in Samarinda-East Kalimantan. From those experiences, I could earn my life during studying without asking to my parents. I was free from paying tuition fee during two years; of course, how happy my family was.

Rarely did I go home at the time for three years. However, I missed my nice family in Penanggak-Tirta Nadi village. Even though I have a poor family, but it honored by my societies in the village. My lovely father Mahyun and mother Sarifah are the person that I respect and love very much. I am the sixth child of sibling. I have five sisters and one brother where the four of my sisters got married and have children. My elder brother called Mahirun, works as a designer in a private office in Mataram. He earns my life during my studies in Islamic Center of Nurul Hakim Kediri West Lombok and in Mataram University at present.

Having a good record in academic and non-academic achievement is one of my ambitions. Before graduating from Islamic Center, I was offered by my teachers and principal to registered in some famous universities in Indonesia by getting fifty percent of tuition fee; such those university are, the University of Indonesia, Ahmad Dahlan University, Gajah Mada University, and State Malang University. I really interested in those universities; however, I am a poor person who does not have enough money to pay for the rest of fifty percent. Therefore, I decided to continue my studies in the University of Mataram. Fortunately; of course, I free from tuition by getting scholarship since 2009 till the present.

For all of these, having a poor family is not an obstacle for me to reach my dream. There are many ways to make them become true. Thus, if we want to be trusted by the number of people, we have to show our best. In addition, we have to have self-confident and work hard and do not belief on luck because luck is only five percent of successfulness. I believe that, having self-confident, work hard as well as belief what we have done best; of course, we will get a good reward of it.
